Kitsune Mask FAQ

What does a kitsune mask mean?

In Japanese folklore the fox (kitsune) is the messenger of Inari, the deity of rice, harvests and prosperity, so a fox mask carries associations of good fortune and protection — alongside the fox's older reputation as a playful shapeshifter. Today kitsune masks are worn at festivals and shrine visits, and collected as wearable art.

What is the Japanese fox mask called?

In Japanese it is called a kitsune-men (狐面), literally "fox mask." Designs that cover only part of the face, such as the chin or half masks in this collection, are worn tilted on the head or over the lower face.

What is habutae-bari?

Habutae-bari (羽二重張り) is a traditional craft technique used by Komendo for these fox masks. Habutae-bari masks are made by hand in small numbers and are rarely available outside Japan; each piece differs subtly from the next.
