Ichimatsu — the checkerboard. Japan treats it as a traditional pattern; the West has the same grid as the checker. It reads as both at once, and that is what makes it worth looking at: a regular array that people on either side of the world seem to have taken as a mark of order.
Senryumon (染流紋) is Komendo's checkerboard series, coloured by the designer W. Mushoku in three ways. The pattern is identical across all three; the palette is what makes each one a separate work. Checkered paving, water running down the cheek, buds opening into flower — stillness against motion, Japanese and Western, traditional and modern at the same time.
Checkered paving, water, flower — laid over a base of blue. This is Seiran (青藍), the indigo reading of the pattern.
Finish: full gloss. A urethane topcoat over the painted surface gives the whole mask a lacquered shine, sheds light rain and keeps dirt from settling. The design is also built up in many passes — paint, dry, paint again — so it takes considerably longer at the bench than a single-pass design.
Size: H 26cm x W 16cm x D 14cm (20cm excluding the ears). Fits S to L faces.
About the Standard Version
This is Komendo's standard construction: recycled paper laminated over the mould, then a base coat applied before the design is painted. It is the original method the maker has refined since 1989. Against the habutae-bari version of the same design, a standard mask runs roughly twice the weight — in the region of 200–260g depending on the design — and is correspondingly sturdier. The base coat and the urethane topcoat also make it far less sensitive to handling than habutae-bari, which is painted straight onto the bare laminate with no base coat at all.
How to Wear
Place the lower edge of the mask on your chin so that your chin line just slightly peeks out beneath it. This creates the most beautiful side profile and keeps the mask stable during wear.
Care & Storage
- Avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature environments.
- The urethane topcoat sheds light moisture and resists soiling. If the mask does get wet, gently blot with a dry cloth and air-dry in the shade. Do not rub.
Ordering & Shipping
Authorized Komendo retailer — officially sourced from the maker, never resale. As an authorized retailer, we order your mask directly from Komendo. We place orders with the maker once a week, and your mask usually ships from our Tokyo shop within 1–2 weeks, followed by international shipping. In the rare case the maker has no stock available, we will cancel your order and issue a full refund in our weekend processing. Orders with multiple items ship together once everything is ready.
