The hoju (宝珠) - the sacred flaming jewel - is one of the most recognizable symbols of Inari, Japan's Shinto deity of foxes and harvests. Shrine foxes are frequently depicted holding the hoju, its flames rising as an offering of divine protection. This fox mask brings that symbolism to life in layered construction and hand-painted detail.

The Premium Habutae-bari edition represents the pinnacle of Komendo's craft: 12 layers laminated by hand with rice paste, no base coat applied, approximately 30g.

About Habutae-bari

Habutae-bari is an advanced papercraft technique: 12 layers laminated with rice paste only, with no base paint coating applied. The result weighs approximately 30g - less than half a standard mask (~80g) - and retains a warm, natural surface texture. Because no base coating is applied, habutae-bari masks are more delicate than standard versions.

How to Wear

Place the lower edge of the mask on your chin so that your chin line just slightly peeks out beneath it. This creates the most beautiful side profile and keeps the mask stable during wear.

Care & Storage

Avoid direct sunlight and high-temperature environments.
If the mask gets wet, gently blot with a dry cloth and air-dry in the shade. Do not rub.
Habutae-bari has no base coating and is more sensitive to moisture than standard masks. Handle with care.

Authorized Komendo retailer — officially sourced from the maker, never resale. As an authorized retailer, we order your mask directly from Komendo. We place orders with the maker once a week, and your mask usually ships from our Tokyo shop within 1–2 weeks, followed by international shipping. In the rare case the maker has no stock available, we will cancel your order and issue a full refund in our weekend processing. Orders with multiple items ship together once everything is ready.
